SPEND OUT: OUR APPROACH

Spend out is the practice of redistributing all an institution’s philanthropic wealth & resources into new and existing ecosystems to steward mission into the future, rather than hoarding them in perpetuity.

REDISTRIBUTING WEALTH

By 2030, Tara will redistribute all our philanthropic resources to organizations devoted to the gender and racial justice movements we support, led by people deeply rooted in the communities they serve. Tara’s redistribution of institutional wealth into a ecosystem of movement builders that will steward our mission into the future.

Why Spend Down?

Define the concept: What does it mean to spend down, and how is this different from traditional philanthropic approaches?

Notes of extractive philanthropy here. Our spend down approach as a strategic choice aligned with our justice commitments and 100% mission aligned approach .

How spending down connects to our commitment to redistribute power transform philanthropy in service of justice: away from hording wealth, power, and control (philanthropy = mirroring the extractive systems that created the wealth) and toward an abundant future where resources are redistributed to those most harmed by systems of extraction and exploitation.

Is it right for your foundation?

Present spending down as a strategic option to consider, not a universal prescription. Present it as both a strategic option and a  mindset that any foundation can adopt

Articulate the specific paradigm shifts that a spend-down approach encourages, regardless of perpetuity (urgency, risk-taking, focus, etc)

Some kind of invitation to consider a spendout mindset in your own work…
