A more just, vibrant & thriving future rooted in economic, gender, and racial justice requires us to move away from extractive philanthropy: to redistribute wealth, amplify power, shift economic control and transform both our collective and personal mindsets.

Tara is a 100% mission-aligned, spend down foundation, redistributing resources and amplifying power in service of just, vibrant futures.

EMERGING STRATEGIES FOR EXTRACTIVE PHILANTHROPY

At Tara, we’re moving away from extractive philanthropy through our emerging strategies. We invite you along on our journey as it unfolds to consider integrating into your own philanthropic work.

By 2030 we will redistribute all our philanthropic resources to the gender and racial justice movements we support to lead this work forward. Our journey has taught us that true justice cannot be born of traditional philanthropy— it demands that the privileged confront and reshape our relationships with power, and redistribute our historically unjust status & wealth.

LET US REINTRODUCE OURSELVES

  • 100% Mission Alignment

Reimagine how you steward your resources with social impact investing, integrated capital, and shifts in governance and people decisions to more fully align with your mission and values.

  • Spend Down Strategy

We’re redistributing our institutional wealth into a future-thinking ecosystem of movement builders that will steward our mission forward.

  • Theory of Transformation

Ultimately, the transformation of philanthropy — and beyond —  isn’t just about changing systems or practices. It’s about changing ourselves and, in doing so, expanding what’s possible in our work and shared world.

A SHIFT IN POWER DYNAMICS

We are calling for a shift from hoarding power to sharing & amplifying power, from traditional philanthropy to transformative philanthropy.

Most philanthropic wealth in the US is rooted in a legacy of economic extraction and exploitation. We know traditional philanthropy is extractive philanthropy.

Traditional philanthropy upholds the legacy of wealth in the hands of a few in perpetuity. It encourages extractive investments that can massively grow a portfolio while breaking down the very foundations of your purpose.

That messy, deep wound of our shared legacy runs deep in altruism. While we were always a spend down foundation, deep listening to our community led us to the fact that we had to look at the capital we hold and choose to break from the long standing structures we were and are the beneficiaries of.

We know firsthand how difficult this is— we’ve faced our own resistance, made countless mistakes, and continue to learn from movement leaders who generously challenge our assumptions. We are driven by a vision for what can happen when philanthropy transforms— a future where VISION HERE.

Make Shift Happen

Transformation in philanthropy begins with the transformation of its leaders. Deep work and big risks in philanthropy can only happen with the effort and willingness of the minds holding power.

This is hard work; we know it. As we enter into our final phase, we’re embracing the vulnerability of honest reflection— sharing both the moments that validate our approach and the ongoing struggles that remind us how much we still have to learn. In the hopes it will inspire you to make shift happen.

Follow Along with our ongoing series – Make Shift Happen – offering up stories, reflections, insights, lessons learned, and breakthroughs as we work to transform philanthropy, starting with transforming ourselves.

We invite you, fellow philanthropists, to dive deep with us into the “sticky” questions that might just transform traditional philanthropy. To investigate, with curiosity, how philanthropy can work differently to support change— leading with relationships, sharing power, and transforming from the inside out.
