Philanthropy: The Origin Story (S1E1)

The word “philanthropy” literally means “love of humanity.” But what if traditional philanthropic models actually reinforce unjust systems? In the first video conversation of our Make Shift Happen series, Tenesha Duncan Bose, Founder and CEO of Orchid Capital Collective and Maria Nakae, Senior Director of Justice Transition Investing at Justice Funders, dig into the history of philanthropy and explore the ways traditional philanthropic practices can perpetuate harm and exacerbate inequality. The 5/95 Model of Philanthropy: Strategies for 100% Mission Alignment (S1E2)

Did you know that under US tax law, foundations are required to distribute only 5% of their assets as grants every year? This means the remaining 95% typically get reinvested into conventional financial markets to continue building wealth. We call this the 5/95 model. In the second video conversation of our Make Shift Happen series, Erika Seth Davies, CEO of Rhia Ventures, and Ruth Shaber, Tara Health Foundation Founder and President, discuss which philanthropic practices need to shift to meet the challenges of the current moment. Join the conversation to consider how philanthropy can evolve beyond the 5/95 model, and explore the ways 100% mission alignment should go far beyond investment strategy, to impact all aspects of philanthropy’s work.

In this revealing exchange, Mariko shares If/When/How’s experience navigating a wave of funder spend outs, along with the challenges and opportunities presented by this sea change in philanthropy. She also discusses the infrastructure investment that If/When/How and similar organizations need from funders, in order to do their work sustainably and grow beyond reliance on a shifting philanthropic ecosystem.

From Conflict to Confluence of Interest (S1E7)

Finding a confluence, rather than conflict, of interest, means we’re engaging with the complexity, nuance, and care that a more regenerative and inclusive economic system requires. That’s because natural confluences arise when people with direct experience make decisions about the issues they face.

Episode 7 of Tara Health Foundation’s Make Shift Happen series unpacks the legal and ethical implications for more inclusive decision-making, featuring Nwamaka Agbo, founding CEO of Kataly Foundation and managing director of Kataly’s Restorative Economies Fund and Rachel Robasciotti, founder and Co-CEO of Adasina Social Capital and Tara Health Foundation Board Member. They share what it means to bring who they are and where they come from into their roles—and decisions—to move power and resources back to communities.

Birthing New Futures through Community-Led Care (S1E8)

We know midwifery-led models of care change outcomes for families and communities. Why aren’t they resourced accordingly?

Kiki Jordan, Founder and Executive Director of Birthland Midwifery and Tenesha Duncan, Founder and CEO of Orchid Capital Collective dig into this question in Episode 8 of Make Shift Happen, connecting their personal journeys to movements for birth and reproductive justice, the well-known benefits of community-led care, and the ways philanthropy can—and must—move differently to resource this essential work.

Building Movement-Led Ecosystems of Capital (S1E10)

In Episode 10 of Make Shift Happen, Maria Nakae, Senior Director of Just Transition Investing at Justice Funders talks with Tenesha Duncan, CEO and founder of Orchid Capital Collective, about the growing ecosystem of movement-led funds that are shifting the flow of capital and power while rewriting the rules of finance. Orchid’s Tepal Fund and the Just Transition Integrated Capital (JTIC) Fund are both part of this ecosystem, drawing down resources from larger institutions and redistributing them in ways that embody values of shared leadership and democratic governance that are accountable to communities. Maria and Tenesha surface the power of integrated capital——the coordinated use of various forms of capital such as grants, 0% or low-interest loans, and technical assistance in meeting the needs of communities and fully leveraging all of a foundation’s assets toward regenerative economic models.

Healing as Movement Infrastructure (S1E11)

What will it take to treat healing as critical infrastructure to our movement work? For Maria Nakae, Senior Director of Just Transition Investing at Justice Funders and Tenesha Duncan, CEO and founder of Orchid Capital Collective it starts with how philanthropy resources it.

When we talk about movement infrastructure, the conversation often skews tactical— leadership development, technical assistance, financial vehicles for governing and moving money. While critical for healthy movements, it’ll only get us so far if people are so unwell, so guarded and defensive of their funding, that we can’t show up for each other in our fullest humanity and build the supportive, trusting relationships that embody and advance our visions for the future.

Lessons From Spending Out (S1E12)

“There isn’t a culture, there isn’t a structure, there isn’t even a self-interest in humanity, typically, that says you need to decline, not grow.”

Episode 12 of Make Shift Happen, featuring Glen Galaich, quoted above, and Tara Health’s Executive Director, Elise Belusa, brings these foundation leaders together to talk about the multiple axes where spending out rubs against dominant paradigms, whether of perpetuity and endless growth or our sense of control over outcomes and the drive to prove them. Elise and Glen reflect on the experience of leading through spend out, which requires us to ground our mindsets in the very nature of change—and what we can do to usher it in.

The Personal Work Systems of Change (S1E15)

In Episode 15 of Make Shift Happen, Elise Belusa, Executive Director, and Ruth Shaber, MD, Founder and President, share about the personal work of confronting the white supremacy embedded in Tara Health’s structures and culture and reorienting the foundation’s work toward racial justice.

Tara Health’s journey with racial justice started when a grantee offered the team a piece of honest reflection about how the whiteness of the staff, practices, and structures at Tara Health were creating blind spots in our work. To really hear them, Ruth, Elise, and the rest of the team had to move through the layers of defensiveness and shame that often surfaces when we are shown what we haven’t been able to see.

The Deeper Work of Trust-Based Philanthropy (S1E17)

Shaady Salehi, then-Co-Executive Director and now Senior Fellow of the Trust-Based Philanthropy Project, describes trust-based practices as entry points into deeper relationships with grantees, spaces which can unlock mindset shifts and structural changes for funders. In her conversation with Mia Relly, Deputy Director of Tara Health Foundation, Shaady underscores the power of these relationships for mutual learning among funders and grantees, a radical shift from the traditional, one-way stance of the “funder knows best.”

Grantee relationships, however, aren’t—and can’t be—the only site for funders’ learning. Here, there are opportunities for funders to deepen their trust-based practices and mindsets by learning from and with their peers in philanthropy, collectively moving the sector in experimenting with what happens when we de-center ourselves and work in reciprocal relationships with our communities.
